As part of their pre-budget submission, the Alzheimer Society of Ireland requested that we contact our local TDs to raise the issue of the state of Dementia home- and community-based care in Ireland. Roisin Shortall TD raised these issues in the Dail yesterday. Her response to our letter is included below and the relevant portion of the Dail discussion can be found by clicking here:

Response from Roisin Shortall, TD

Thank you for your email on the issue of dementia care. I have to say from the outset, that the provision of home care for older and disabled persons is the issue that my office deals with most frequently on a day to day basis.

I raised the issue on the floor of the Dáil yesterday and through two Parliamentary Questions to the Minister for Health. I attach the replies and the transcript of the contribution below.

The Funding increases that the replies mention have had little impact on the ground yet, it remains to be seen what will be included in the forthcoming budget for home care for people with dementia. Finally, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s budget submission has been brought to the attention of the Social Democrats’ policy team. The submission will feed into the party’s budget document that will be launched next week.

I hope that this information is useful to you.

Best regards

Róisín Shortall TD
