The Alzheimer Cafe Model

Ryevale Tea 1

The Alzheimer Cafe model originates in the Netherlands and is very well established there, with more than 180 Alzheimer Cafes throughout the country. Anyone who is affected by dementia – people with a diagnosis of dementia, partners, families and friends – can attend, share their experiences and get support from a range of health and social care professionals and from others in a similar position to themselves.

The Alzheimer Cafe is designed to complement other support services. It offers support, information, and an environment where there is openness about dementia. There is an emphasis on the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of dementia rather than just the medical.

The key aims of an Alzheimer Cafe include:

  • To reduce the stigma, denial, and secrecy around dementia
  • To provide a safe and relaxed place for people with dementia and their partners, families, and friends to meet others in the same situation as themselves
  • To provide meaningful support and education to people with dementia and those who support them
  • To facilitate informal contact between families and those in health and social care support roles
  • To supplement, rather than to compete with, reproduce, or replace, other forms of information or support

What happens at an Alzheimer Cafe?

The Alzheimer cafe has a relaxed and friendly environment and we want everyone to feel at ease. The first part of the Cafe is about socialising. People come and sit at tables and chat over a cup of tea or coffee, so they have a chance to talk with other who have similar experiences to their own. There is then an opportunity to hear a talk about some aspect of dementia, followed by a discussion and more general chat. People also have an opportunity to speak directly to the speaker, and to other health and social care professionals, and experienced volunteers who attend the cafe each month.

Guest speakers are typically health or social care professionals, but from time to time a person living with a diagnosis of dementia or a person caring for someone with dementia will share their experiences and recommend tips and strategies for living well with dementia.

The cafe (and refreshments) are free of charge, and like any cafe, people can come and go as they wish.

The Alzheimer Cafe in Ireland

In June 2011, a group of healthcare professionals got together to set up Ireland’s first Alzheimer Cafe in the Avila Centre in Donnybrook, Dublin. Since then, other groups of individuals around Ireland have come together to set up Alzheimer Cafes in their local communities. Some take place in the evenings, others during the day.

The Alzheimer Cafe Leixlip has been running since April 2016. It now runs on the second Wednesday of every month from 7-9pm.
